Северную крайнюю точку в тематическом номере «От Москвы до самых до окраин» представляет отдалённый арктический архипелаг – Земля Франца-Иосифа, образ которой нашёл воплощение в творчестве Владимира Королёва. К освоению Северного полюса художника толкала сама судьба. Родом из донских казаков, он рано осиротел, родители погибли на войне. Уехав из Сталинграда, Королёв окончил Московское художественно-промышленное училище и устроился на смоленский льнокомбинат художником-жаккардистом. Переломным событием для него стало путешествие по Северному морскому пути, предложенное Союзом художников СССР. Знакомство с уникальной природой Арктики, поездка на Землю Франца-Иосифа, бескрайние просторы снега и льда буквально потрясли сознание. Состоялись переезд с семьёй и обустройство дальнейшей жизни на Диксоне, где Владимир Королёв активно занимался художественной, педагогической и музейной деятельностью. Franz Josef Arcipelago. Love and Fate

In this thematic issue of our magazine “From Moscow to the Farthest Borderlands”, the Franz Josef Archipelago, whose image is the focal point in the art of Vladimir Korolev, represents the extreme northern point of the country. The artist’s interest in the North Pole was prompted by the very course of his life: coming from a family of Don Cossacks and early becoming an orphan after his parents perished in the war, he left Stalingrad and, having graduated from the Moscow School of Art and Industry, took up a position of jacquard designer at a linen factory in Smolensk. A voyage along the Northern Sea Route organized by the USSR Artists’ Union became a turning point for Vladimir Korolev: his acquaintance with the unique Arctic nature and the boundless vistas of snow and ice, as well as a trip to the Franz Josef Archipelago left him utterly overwhelmed. He and his family relocated for good to the Dickson Island, where the artist became keenly engaged in local artistic, educational and museum activities.
