Живописец и график Александр Евгеньевич Яковлев (1887–1938) стал одним из последних выпускников Императорской Академии художеств, которому удалось отправиться в пенсионерскую поездку в Италию. Однако с началом Первой мировой войны практика в Риме прервалась. Продолжение последовало лишь два года спустя, но уже в Китае. На выбор страны повлияли как личный интерес художника к Поднебесной, так и окружение, в котором было много учёных востоковедов. Уже в Китае выяснилось, что обещанной Яковлеву стипендии от Академии не предвидится. Налаживанию быта в чужой стране Александру Евгеньевичу способствовали редкие заказы и помощь новых знакомых. Основой творчества Яковлева того периода стали сцены театральной жизни и зарисовки из поездок по Китаю. После путешествия на Восток художник не вернулся на родину, его наследие находится сегодня во всех уголках света.

Alexander Yakovlev’s First Chinese Route (1917–1919). The Artist’s Circle

The painter and graphic artist Alexander Yakovlev (1887–1938) was one of the last graduates of the Imperial Academy of Arts who managed to go on a pensioner trip to Italy. However, his practical studies at a studio in Rome were cancelled, due to the beginning of World War I, only to be resumed two years later, this time in China. The choice of country was influenced both by the artist’s interest in the Celestial Empire and by his environment made up of many Orientalist scholars. Upon Yakovlev’s arrival in China it became evident that his stipend from the Academy of Arts would not be paid. To provide for subsistence, he accepted occasional orders and received help from new friends. During that time, scenes from theatrical life and sketches made during trips around China became the main themes of the artist’s works. After his trip to the East the artist did not return to Russia and parts of his heritage may be found today in all corners of the world.
