Yevgraf Konchin (1930-2011) is a well-known journalist, who for many years was a correspondent of the newspaper Sovetskaya kultura (Soviet Culture) and author of a 4-volume collection about those who created the epoch – museum workers, restorers and rescuers of monuments. Contemporary artists occupied a special place in his works. “The Tragedy of Pavel Korin” is the title of one of his stories, which, as any work of literature, may allow some fiction that does not confirm with the historical truth. We appreciate the help of the staff of the Pavel Korin Museum (a department of the State Tretyakov Gallery) in clarifying some biographical facts (given in the notes) in the course of publishing this material. The uncompleted painting “Requiem”, a monumental artwork of a spiritual and moral content, was the tragedy of the artist. The author describes in detail the friendship between Pavel Korin and Maxim Gorky and members of his family – this is confirmed by the former's artistic heritage that includes portraits of Maxim Gorky and his daughter-in-law Nadezhda Peshkova. Of special interest are paintings publicized for the first time.
